Respirator fit testing is a requirement for any employee who is in your respirator fit program. It assures the wearer that the mask properly fits their face and is in good working order. There are two types of fit test that can be performed, quantitative and qualitative.
Quantitative Fit Testing
Quantitative testing involves using a machine to create negative pressure that would simulate inhalation when a person uses the mask to filter out contaminants. This is accomplished with adapters that attach to the respirator while it is being worn. The outcome of quantitative tests is a precise numerical rating referred to as the fit factor.
Qualitative Fit Testing
Qualitative testing is a sensitivity test that uses a substance to determine if a leak exists. A sweet or bitter substance is sprayed around the respirator while it is worn and if the wearer is unable to taste the substance the mask passes. This method is particularly useful for masks without removable filters, such as N-95 disposable respirators.
